During last year’s La Tomatina Festival, visitors were charged a fee for the first time in the festival’s 69-year history. Festival-goers were charged 10 Euro to participate, and this fee was introduced to both limit the ever-increasing crowds, as well as provide a stimulus for the rough recession-hit Spanish economy.
The fee meant many participants had to miss out, which was shown in the drop in attendance from 40,000 from 2012’s festival to 20,000 in 2013. However, the fee did not stop those that did attend from hurling 130 tonnes of tomatoes at each other.
Let’s hope they don’t jack up the price for this and subsequent years.
