Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
One of the biggest food fights on the planet occurs every last Wednesday of August in Buñol, Spain.
While La Tomatina features parades, music and even fireworks, it all culminates in an epic tomato battle in the city streets.
Over 40 tons of tomatoes
That’s right, over 40,000 kilos of tomatoes are used during the festival and brought into the streets by trucks when the battle commences. After this, it’s complete mayhem!
Not just any tomatoes
These are grown specifically for La Tomatina in a southern region of Spain. They have a very low nutritional value and don’t actually taste very good. They’re cheap to produce and slightly softer than other tomatoes.
Squash them!
Festival rules dictate that tomatoes are squashed before being thrown to prevent injury. It also makes for a messier direct hit of course. Participants are advised to wear goggles however.
